吴少怀认为鼓胀的发生与情志不畅、酒食不节、黄疸失治等因素密切相关，主要由肝、脾、肾三脏脏腑功能失调所致，以肝失疏泄、脾失健运、水湿停滞、气滞血瘀为基本病机。肝病日久，木郁乘脾，脾失健运，水湿内生，阻碍气机，气不行血，瘀血阻络，发为鼓胀。治疗上从肝、脾、肾三脏入手，疏肝健脾、行气利水、活血祛瘀。临证注重补中健运，治水不离治气，善用温药，攻补兼施，活用五苓散、自拟和肝丸和自拟乙癸丸等方剂治疗鼓胀，常能收到较好疗效。附验案1则。

WU Shaohuai believed that the occurrence of bulging is closely related to factors such as stress,indulging in drinking and eating and jaundice. It is mainly caused by the dysfunction of the liver,spleen and kidneys,of which the basic pathogenesis lies in the liver's failing in dispersing,the spleen's failing in transportation,stagnation of water and dampness,qi stagnation and blood stasis. Long term of liver disease leads to stagnation that invades the spleen,the spleen's failing in transportation causes stagnation of water and dampness,which in turn hinders qi and forms congestion that obstructs the collaterals and finally leads to bulging. The treatment starts with the liver,spleen and kidneys,which soothes the liver and strengthens the spleen,promotes qi and diuresis,promotes blood circulation and removes blood stasis. The clinical treatment focuses on invigorating the middle and promoting vitality,treating water without neglecting qi. He was good at using warm medicinals that both attack and tonify,and flexibly applied Wuling Powder（五 苓 散 ）,Self-made Hegan Pill（自拟和肝丸）,Self-made Yigui Pill （ 自 拟 乙癸丸 ） and other prescriptions to treat bulging,which achieves significant effects.
